THE WAY OF THE CROSS

Image

Both the way of the cross and the recitation of the Rosary are the simplest prayers and meditation for all of us who are normal Catholics. We can reflect especially on the way of the cross of how Jesus reached his goal to redeem the whole world. God so loved the world that He shared His Son Jesus with us. The way of the cross shows us how much Jesus loved us by carrying the heavy cross and dying for us to give us his redemption. We don’t need any theological background to meditate on the way of the cross. Christ showed his love by dying on the cross. Let us also show our Christianity through our deeds and actions. Each station of the cross can be connected to our life’s situation and we can draw a lot of lessons for lives.

Station 1. Jesus is condemned to death.
Pilate knew that Jesus was innocent. But he was mortally scared of the crowd and was concerned about his own popularity. He knew that it was unjust to condemn Jesus. He never stood for justice. In our lives too we sometimes don’t stand for justice and we are concerned about own popularity. We keep silent when we have to raise our voices for justice. Sins are not merely evil deeds. Sins are also committed when we have to speak, we keep silent. Truth shall never die. Let us always speak the TRUTH and stand for justice.

Station 2- Jesus is made to carry his cross.
Although Jesus knew that the cross was heavy to carry, he carried it with gladness and joy on account of our sins. Life is not bed of roses. We all have a lot of crosses to carry in our daily lives. The Crosses are entirely different to each one of us and at times they can be heavy. The crosses are our challenges to face them. Temptations and crosses have to be dealt with proper attitudes. None of us are exception to problems. With the courage of the Lord let us carry our crosses. Come to me all those who are burden, you shall find rest, says Christ to us.

Station 3- Jesus falls the first time.
The cross is heavy but Christ takes the challenge of reaching his goal with great courage. He had a great goal to reach. Christ rises after his fall. When a child begins to walk or takes the first step, it falls many times before it can walk properly. The parents never scold the child that the child has fallen. On the other hand the parents help the child to walk again. God does the same with us. When we fall, God does the same with us. He helps us to rise and walk on the correct path.  With God’s strength and help let us also walk in the path of Christ in spite of our crosses.

Station 4 – Jesus meets His sorrowful mother.
Just imagine a mother experiencing the suffering of her son. It is purely for the redemption of the World. Our Blessed Mother sacrificed her own Son to be our Saviour. We use the Redeemer to Jesus. Mary also closely co-operated in the work of Redemption with Christ. She played a key role in the history of salvation from the time she gave birth to her Son. She not only fed her Son with her milk, but also gave Him encouragement, strength and great support for her Son to fulfil his mission. Dear Mothers! Encourage your children to achieve their positive goals in life without ruining their lives.

Station 5 -  Simon from Cyrene helps Jesus to carry His cross.
Simon was compelled to carry the Cross of Jesus. He was a stranger. He was a passer-by. First Simon was reluctant but later he felt that it was his responsibility to assist Jesus. Today there are so many people in the world who have serious problem to carry their own crosses. Loneliness is one of the worst sickness or burden in the world. Some of them experience heavy burden and can’t cope up with the heavy load of lives. Can we also share some of the burdens of others? At the same time Christ tells us” Come to me all those who are burden, you shall find rest in me. Let us go to Jesus with confidence when we have problems so that we may find relief. Help does not only mean only to give some money, but our time and to console people. It can be a simple smile. Smile costs you nothing but creates a lot.

Station 6 – Veronica wipes the face of Jesus.
The word wiping has number of connotations. We wipe the dirt or wipe the floor, wipe away the tears, wipe away evils and so on. Veronica loved Jesus so much. She wipes Jesus’ face with love and with agony. She shows her greatest love to Jesus to wipe away his sweat. We come across many people who require that we wipe away their sorrows, darkness in life, depressions, economic crisis, loneliness, selfishness and anxieties. Some today are travelling through a dark tunnel where there is no light. They are blind and they don’t know where and how to proceed in their lives. Though the world has advanced in technology, medicine and science, still the man is living under so many acute and severe problems. Without complaining about darkness, let us light a candle.

Station 7- Jesus falls the second time.
Falling is quite usual. To err is human but to forgive is divine. To remain in the same state or in the same condition where we have fallen is to swim in the area of sin. The famous philosopher Socrates said,” Know yourself”. Some of us are very blind to us. We always look at the mirrors when we dress ourselves. We also must have our own mirror to look at our lives to know ourselves who we are. Once we know who we are then that is the first step for our positive move in our journey towards peace and harmony. Unfortunately some of us look for a short sighted solution and have become victims to drugs, addiction to alcohol, gambling to overcome our own problems. These are like mirages which do not help us much. On the other hand the evils habits take hold of our hands and they become our second nature and we are unable to find a solution. Then we enter into a state of depression. Let us realize our own mistakes and try our best to overcome them like Jesus rising from his fall, marched towards his supreme goal of Calvary.

Station 8 – The women of Jerusalem weep over Jesus.
This is one the best stations of the cross I love to meditate and preach especially because it focuses our attention on FAMILY LIFE. The words of Christ to the women of Jerusalem are very particular to our families and to the society of today. At times we weep over other people’s agony and suffering. But we forget our own weaknesses and our children. Today there is a tendency to neglect our children’s welfare by some of the parents. Some of us think quite wrongly that earning money is the only goal in our lives at the expense of our own children or neglecting the family life. So Christ’s words “Don’t cry for me, but cry for you and for your children”, can be meditated, pondered and reflected. How many parents have washed their hands regarding their responsibilities towards their children? The number of irresponsible parenthood is on the increase and as a result or consequence of this, is the total collapse of the society by criminalities. Prisons are flooded with youngsters. Let us look at own families and apply to our families how far Christ’s words are applicable to each family.

Station 9- Jesus falls the third time.
It was the Pope Pius the 12th who said that the worst sin in the world is that people have forgotten the aspect of sin today. Today’s worst enemies for our spiritual growth or spiritual journey are that the people are beginning to forget God and losing the aspect of sin. When we remove God from our hearts, then Satan dominates and controls our lives. The spiritual growth is neglected even by the countries where Catholicism was predominantly practiced. The secularism, consumerism and materialism have replaced. A fourth world has developed as a result of these. Production of arms and ammunitions are on the increase to keep the Third world under the control of the First world. History repeats itself. Even some of the so called The First world countries have begun to experience the economic crisis, unemployment, trafficking, smuggling drugs to destroy the youths of today. God gave a command to man” go and build the world”. But man has turned it to topsy-turvy by his own selfishness. The world is falling not three times but it is continuing to collapse for worse. Who is responsible? God?

 Image

Station 10- Jesus stripped of his garments.
Garments and clothes are meant to protect our bodies. But unfortunately clothes have become
sources of sins for some. Even the first woman Eve realized that she was without clothes or naked after her first sin. The soldiers will not even leave behind Jesus’ span cloth either. They stripped his clothes and divided his clothes among themselves throwing dice to see who would get which piece of clothing, says the Gospel of Mark. It shows our greediness to possess. Buddha said; Greediness is the root cause of all evils. It is greediness that generates all evils in the world. Our greediness departs only after fifteen minutes of our death, says a great thinker. The greatest tragedy today is to possess more, own more, acquire more and amass more. Christ reminds us” What does it profit for a man if he gains the whole world and loses his own soul? Money is good. Money should not be our master. No one can serve both God and mammon.

 Image

Station 11 – Jesus is nailed to the Cross.
The last lap of Christ sufferings comes to an end with the nailing to the Cross. The soldiers just followed the orders of their cruel rulers. The intention to wipe away Jesus who was truthful was the sole intention of his rulers. Jesus was a great threat to the ruling and Jesus totally opposed the hypocritical ways of the rulers of his time. The rulers were merely concerned of their own benefits rather than their subjects. The world has not changed much either even though we have advanced in technology and science. The truthful leaders are not spared by guns. The world is still in darkness. Heroes like Mahatma Ghandi, Abraham Lincoln, Nelson Mandela and Mother Theresa are the great figures for the world today. Gospel of John says” Jn 1:9-11. Christ the light came to the world. But the world rejected him. The world preferred the darkness. What do I prefer? Three nails also can be compared to money, power and prestige. The world is longing for these disappearing values of life. For the children three nails are belief in God, good education and good moral life.

Station 12 – Jesus is raised upon the Cross and dies.
A beautiful text to meditate on our lives Phil 2:6-11 where Christ was equal to God….
Unless a seed falls to the ground and dies it does not bear fruits. We all have to die many times in our lives for our selfishness, greediness, attitude of arrogance, proud and uncharitable deeds. Christ’s goal was to achieve his noble end to redeem the whole world is ultimately realised by his death on the cross. The world can kill the idealists who fight for certain noble goals and motivations. But the world can’t kill their ideals. It is on the death that life is built. Truth shall never die. A good friend can give to his own friend is to sacrifice his own life. Christ was not a man of mere words but actions. The Jews thought that Christ’s life was completely finished. But actually Christ’s life commences with his death on the cross. Let us bear fruits to the world through our sacrificial lives as Christ did. Christ’s death was for his RESURRECTED life. We all have to rise from the severe problems of the world today.

 Image

Station 13- Jesus is taken from the Cross and given to His mother.
Let us imagine the sorrow of our Blessed Mother to keep her son who gave his life for the world in her lap. She not only gave and fed her Son with her own milk but also she gave him strength, courage, guidance and direction until Jesus began his public ministry when he turned thirty years old. The Gospel of Luke affirms that Jesus grew in wisdom and knowledge until he was thirty. Lot of mothers is crying over their lost children owing to their irresponsible motherhood. Irresponsible parenthood is the root cause for the major problems of their children. God said to the first parents,” go and produce, but not produce and go”. What the society needs today is the responsible parenthood. Dear parents! Don’t wash your hands regarding your great responsibility to bring your children to be good catholic and good citizens of the country. A mother plays a key role in bringing up the children with the support of her husband. Let us make our homes where peace, love, harmony prevail where God’s presence is felt.

 Image

Station 14 - Jesus is laid in the Sepulchre.
Christ’s body was not mortal. As he foretold He will rise on the third day. The Jews thought that the History of Jesus was over with his burial. The history of people always begins with their deaths. Jesus neither wrote any book nor was he an author to any book. But many have written about him. Why? If Jesus has not risen from his death, our belief is baseless or without foundation, says St.Paul. Christ’s burial reminds us that we have to bury certain evil forces that corrupt our lives. What are the evil forces that influence my life? What hinders me from loving God? Today the world experiences lot of differences in the world namely caste, colour, cultures, language, religion, rich and poor. These differences have to be buried. Let us show to the world that we all belong to ONE human race where there will be greater harmony and peace. The rich nations may cease to produce arms and ammunitions but on the other hand as God gave his command to man, “Go and develop the world and not destroy it by our selfish ways.
